Learn about Diabetes Type 2.

Is waistband feeling a bit tight?

Did you know that carrying excess weight around your middle can be a risk factor for developing Diabetes Type 2 and being overweight leaves you more at risk of developing the condition?

Many people remain unaware of risk factors, (often hidden and overlooked) that can lead to type 2 diabetes, recently referred to in a tabloid newspaper as the ‘silent killer’.

Type 2 diabetes is a condition where your blood glucose is too high due to lack of insulin or insulin resistance.  Unlike Type 1 Diabetes which is an autoimmune disease, Type 2 can actually be caused by lifestyle with cases increasing dramatically in western countries.

Signs and symptoms of type 2 diabetes can include:

·         Feeling exhausted

·         Unexplained weight loss

·         Increased thirst

·         Increased urination (especially at night)

·         Itching around the genital area and repeatedly getting thrush

·         Cuts and wounds taking longer to heal

·         Blurred vision

Do not fear however as the condition is often reversible through a healthy diet and exercise, evidence shows that losing bodyweight can bring diabetes into remission!

If you find it hard to change your diet a dietitian can help you and only 2.5 hours (aim for 30 mins, 5 times per week) of physical exercise per week can lower blood sugar levels.

A healthy diet should be low in saturated fat, high in fiber, and include a variety of fruits and vegetables.  The Eatwell guide represents the main food groups and shows how these foods should be eaten as part of a well-balanced diet.

Conclusively, weight loss is ultimately the most important thing you can do to help control blood sugar levels, allowing insulin to work and reduce resistance.
